  Geographical situation
Mauritius is situated at approximately 2000 kms off the southeastern coast of Africa and lies east of Madagascar on 20.S degrees, and 57.5E. The land area is 1865kms sq. with 330 kilometres of coastline. Mauritius is 45kms in width and 65kms in length. The inland features include a vast central plateau, subtropical forests, rivers, streams and waterfalls. There are several mountain ranges.

Climate
The temperature on the coastal areas varies between 22 degrees C in winter and 34 degrees C in summer. Sea temperature varies between 22 degrees C and 27 degrees C. In the central part of the island the maximum day-time temperature varies from about 19 degrees C in August to about 26 degrees C in February. The western and northern regions are warmer and relatively drier than the east and the south. Lovely weather prevails around the year on the island. However, December to February is a cyclone-prone period.
  Governmental/Political system
Mauritius is a democratic state based on the Westminster model and enjoys political stability. The president is the head of the state but constitutional power is vested in the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.

Health Precautions
No vaccination is required. However, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers over one year of age and coming from infected areas. Infected areas are those areas which the WHO includes in the endemic zones.

Population
The population of the island is 1.2 million. At different periods of the history of Mauritius, people of different origins-Indians (Hindus and Muslims), Africans, Europeans and Chinese-have settled on the island bringing their cultures, languages, values and traditions. The country is now a melting pot of different people.
